  17. <p>     Now that you've mothballed your fur coat and promised to
  18. eat only dolphin-friendly tuna, here comes the latest sacrifice
  19. for the animal kingdom: balloons. The mass launching of
  20. helium-filled balloons, once a fixture of homecoming games and
  21. political rallies, may soon go the way of goldfish swallowing.
  22. Connecticut, Florida and Tennessee have led the way in outlawing
  23. the practice because ecologists contend that the balloons are
  24. eventually eaten by marine animals. The resulting blockages can
  25. bring death by suffocation or hunger.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     Balloon-industry boosters insist that the product typically
  28. ends its life by shattering at high altitudes into harmless,
  29. biodegradable smithereens. But the argument is lost on some of
  30. the most fervent balloon fanciers: children. In Louisville
  31. fourth-grade students successfully campaigned for a local law to
  32. forbid outdoor launchings.
